CAIIB, short for Certified Associate of Indian Institute of Bankers, is IIBF's professional certification for bankers who want to go past the fundamentals JAIIB covers and get into the deeper end of treasury management, credit risk, and international banking.
The syllabus that came into effect in May/June 2023 is the one governing every CAIIB cycle in 2026, so if you're starting fresh or picking this up after a gap, this is the structure you're working with. Here's the full picture: the syllabus itself, how the exam is structured, what it takes to pass, and what's specific to the 2026 cycle, dates, registration windows, and fees, so you have everything in one place.
A Quick Word on the Pre-2023 Format
If you're only concerned with preparing for 2026, you can skip straight to the syllabus below, everything from here on reflects the current structure. For context, though: before May/June 2023, CAIIB ran as a three-paper exam, two compulsory papers plus one elective chosen from eleven options, with a lower 40% per-paper passing bar and four attempts allowed within two years. That format hasn't applied to any cycle since May/June 2023, so if you're comparing notes with someone who cleared CAIIB before then, this is the structural difference to keep in mind.
Why IIBF Made These Changes
It's worth understanding the reasoning, not just the outcome, because it tells you something about how seriously to take the revised syllabus.
The old three-paper format tested foundational banking knowledge, useful, but not enough to certify someone as having genuinely advanced expertise. Banking itself had also changed considerably since the previous CAIIB structure was set: credit risk, treasury operations, and regulatory compliance had all grown more complex, digital banking had moved from a side topic to a central one, and IIBF's own assessment was that two compulsory papers no longer reflected what a "certified associate" should actually know.
Adding ABFM addressed the financial and business management gap, corporate finance, valuation, M&A, capital budgeting, at a level the old syllabus never touched. Adding BRBL addressed something even more basic: there was previously no dedicated compulsory paper testing banking law and regulation in depth, despite regulatory compliance being one of the most consequential parts of a banker's job. Cutting the elective list from 11 down to 5 also mattered, IIBF consolidated overlapping options (Corporate Banking, Financial Advising, and International Banking were folded out) so the remaining five map more cleanly onto real banking career paths.
In short: the syllabus didn't just get longer. It got more deliberately structured around what senior banking roles actually require.
Structural changes like this don't happen often. The May/June 2023 revision was the first major overhaul in years, and IIBF gave candidates who had already cleared ABM or BFM under the old format credit carryover rather than making them start over, which tells you this was a considered shift, not a routine update. Expect the content inside each paper to keep evolving with things like Basel updates, new RBI circulars, and digital banking developments, but a change to the paper structure itself is unlikely in the near term.
The Current Syllabus: What's Been in Place Since May/June 2023
The revised pattern is a genuinely different exam from what came before it. Four papers are now compulsory instead of two, two entirely new papers were added, and the elective list was cut down significantly. Two new compulsory papers arrived, Advanced Business and Financial Management (ABFM) and Banking Regulations and Business Laws (BRBL), pushing the compulsory count from two papers to four. The elective list shrank from 11 options down to 5. The passing bar went up too, 50 marks per paper minimum instead of the earlier 40. A candidate now sits five papers per attempt instead of three.
Note: each paper carries 100 marks. If you've seen a different total marks figure quoted elsewhere for the revised pattern, that's worth double-checking against IIBF's official notification before relying on it.

Passing Criteria for CAIIB 2026
The rules changed meaningfully from the old format, and getting them wrong can genuinely cost you an attempt.
- You get a maximum of 5 attempts within 3 years, whichever limit comes first
- Attempts start counting from your first registration, not your first appearance, so registering and skipping still uses up an attempt
- Attempts do not need to be consecutive
- If you don't clear all five papers within 3 years or 5 attempts, you have to re-enrol, and credit for any papers you already passed does not carry forward
- You can apply for any five of the six exam cycles available within that three-year window
What's New for the 2026 Cycle Specifically
The paper structure hasn't changed since May/June 2023, but every cycle brings its own dates, registration windows, and fee schedule. Here's what's confirmed for 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many papers are in the CAIIB 2026 syllabus?
Five papers in total: four compulsory (Advanced Bank Management, Bank Financial Management, Advanced Business and Financial Management, and Banking Regulations and Business Laws) plus one elective chosen from five available options.
What changed in the CAIIB syllabus from 2023 onwards?
Two new compulsory papers were added, Advanced Business and Financial Management and Banking Regulations and Business Laws, bringing the compulsory paper count from two to four. The elective list was reduced from 11 options to 5, and the passing threshold rose from 40% per paper to 50% per paper. This structure has been in place since May/June 2023.
How many attempts do I get for CAIIB?
Five attempts within three years from your first registration, whichever limit comes first. Attempts start counting from registration, not from actually sitting the exam, so a skipped attempt still counts.
What is the passing mark for each CAIIB paper?
You need a minimum of 50 out of 100 in each paper, or at least 45 in every paper combined with a 50% aggregate across all papers in a single attempt.
Is the CAIIB syllabus the same for the June and December 2026 cycles?
Yes. The syllabus in place since May/June 2023 applies uniformly to both the June 2026 and December 2026 cycles. Only the registration windows and exam dates differ between the two.
Why did IIBF revise the CAIIB syllabus in May/June 2023?
The previous three-paper format tested foundational knowledge but didn't reflect the depth modern banking roles require, particularly in financial management and regulatory law. Adding ABFM and BRBL as compulsory papers closed that gap, while trimming the elective list from 11 to 5 aligned the remaining options more closely with actual career paths in banking.
Now that you know the structure, the next step is a plan. See our complete CAIIB paper-wise strategy guide for how to prepare for each of these five papers.
